As a life long Richmond resident for over 50 yrs. I whole heartedly support the provision of dependable public transit at reasonable cost throughout the region, but particularly so to & within the denser pockets in our metro region. Living in what is now known as the fan district as a baby & young child I can recall riding the bus with my great grandmother to shop downtown. I remember taking the train, from the station now occupied by the Science Museum, with my Dad to visit relatives in Tidewater and upon our return catching a bus back to our Richmond home. My great grandfather had gliders on the front porch he would wipe down so we could all sit out on them daily & watch the buses roll down Hanover Ave. Even in a household of 7 people only 1 automobile was owned, so parking at home was not as problematic as it is now days.  Later in life I returned to the fan & wouldn’t leave my home without being sure I had bus fare in my pocket. I rode the bus to & from work for many of my early working years in dwntwn Richmond. With the current cost of parking & parking fines I make personal trips downtown less often, but will look to take the bus when I need or want to go there. There are alot more people in our region now than in the bye gone era but our public transit has not grown properly to serve our burgeoning populace. There is still one of my elders alive who never bothered to obtain a driver’s license. As our population ages, more will need good public transportation options so they can take care of their needs independently.
